It does not take great economic acumen to realize that Mexico was damaged by NAFTA, that the surge in immigration has been caused by our own selfish and stupid trade policies, which benefit few of us, also. And domestic policies, I might add. The conservatives have been preaching this Me First stuff as though life were a race to the finish and the only object is to pick up as much money as you can. It doesn't work, not even if you wind up with a lot of toys. As another noted economist said, "we are becoming a nation of private opulence and public squalor."



The vast majority of illegal immigrants would love to stay at home with their families in the land of their birth and the land of their ancestors before them if they could afford to do so. They would stay if they had jobs, or they could raise crops to feed themselves and their neighbors, but they can't. The mighty corporations spawned in the bowels of the hell of vulture capitalism have made impossible to do so.

Nafta has guaranteed a impediment free market for cheap usAmerican corn, with which the small farmer in mexico cannot compete. We've taken the ability to feed himself and his family away from him. Where else can he go to find work? There is only one direction to go...Norte.
